1. Blossoms & Bulbs Spring Nature Study
Nothing says spring like the arrival of the first flowers. In this unit, we dive deep into the anatomy of flowers and the hidden magic of bulbs. We focus our observations on four iconic spring beauties: Cherry Blossoms, Lilacs, Tulips, and Daffodils. It’s a beautiful way to practice botanical sketching and identification.
2. Seeds and Planting
Explorers become botanists and gardeners as they take an in-depth look at the world under and over the soil. This unit covers everything from planting fundamentals and growing zones to the composition of soil and the history of gardening. Children will even engineer their own greenhouse and create DIY seed bombs!
3. Nesting Birds
Birds are the master architects of the spring season. In this study, we explore 9 different bird nests and the birds that call them home. Your family will learn to weave like a Baya Weaver, build a mud nest to observe its deterioration, and keep a dedicated Nest Observation Journal.
4. Animal Homes
Nests aren’t the only homes being built right now. This unit explores the unique architecture of Beavers, Bears, Squirrels, and Rabbits. Children will discover how lodges, dens, dreys, and burrows provide for an animal's needs, and they'll even get to bake "beavertail" pastries during poetry time!
5. Animal Husbandry
Spring on the farm is a busy time filled with new life. Explorers dive into the world of Cows, Sheep, Pigs, and Chickens, learning about their care, history, and purpose. This unit introduces the fundamentals of livestock management and the special bond between humans and farm animals.
6. Mushrooms & Fungi
Become a mycologist and discover the "fungal friends and foes" in the world around you. We study the anatomy and life cycles of mushrooms while exploring foraging, bioluminescence, and medicinal fungi. STEM activities include a fungi dissection and a fascinating look at how penicillin works.
7. Insect Life
Zoom in on the "tiny world" as it wakes up for spring. This unit provides an in-depth look at Butterflies, Dragonflies, Ants, and Honeybees. Children will conduct experiments on chromatography, design an insect hotel, and create a shadow puppet theater to demonstrate what they've learned.
8. Pond Life
Explore the bustling pond ecosystem from the surface down to the muddy floor. We take an in-depth look at Frogs, Turtles, Fish, and Salamanders, studying food chains and the unique traits of amphibians and reptiles. Kids will even study Pointillism to create their own artistic salamander!
9. Weather Cycle
Spring weather is notoriously dynamic! This study breaks down the science of air pressure, the water cycle, wind, and clouds. Students will create their own weather instruments—including a barometer and anemometer—to track shifts in the atmosphere just like real meteorologists.
10. Herbalism
Discover the bridge between ancient traditions and modern science in this 20-day family-style study. Your explorers will trace the journey of plants from roots to remedies, learning about plant anatomy, phytochemicals, and the process of extraction. The unit is packed with hands-on projects, including creating herbal preparations like tinctures, salves, and infused oils, and even learning how to make natural household cleaners. It's a fascinating look at how plants like willow bark paved the way for modern pharmaceuticals!
Spring offers a unique opportunity to witness the cycle of life in real-time. Whether you choose one topic to focus on or weave them all throughout your term, we hope these studies bring joy and discovery to your homeschool days!
