The key to success when introducing chores is to match the chores to your child's developmental stage. Whether your child is just starting to help around the house or is taking on more complex tasks, there are age-appropriate chores for everyone. Here’s a breakdown of chores that are perfect for kids at different ages, from toddlers to tweens, to get your little helpers involved in family life! Chores for Ages 2-4: Little Helpers in Training At this stage, children are still learning basic motor skills, but they love to help out! Chores for toddlers should be simple and fun and help them develop a sense of responsibility. Here are a few ideas to get your toddler or preschooler started: Put Toys Away  – Young children can help pick up toys and put them in baskets or shelves. Wipe Down Surfaces - Toddlers can help wipe down tables or countertops with a damp cloth (if you use cleaner, make sure that is safe for kids). Feed Pets —Depending on the pet, children can help pour food into the bowl or fill its water bowl (with supervision). Sort Laundry — Let your child pick up their dirty clothes and put them in the hamper. They can also match socks, help sort laundry by color, and and help fold dish clothes and hand towels. Help Set Table  – With a parent's help, toddlers can help set out napkins, cups, and utensils for meals. Water Plants  – Give your child a small watering can to help water houseplants. Help Make Their Bed—Children can learn to help make their beds from a young age by placing their pillows at the head of the bed and straightening their blankets. At this age, the goal is to introduce the concept of chores without overwhelming children. Be sure to offer praise and encouragement for a job well done! Chores for Ages 5-8: Growing Independence As children get older, they can handle more responsibility. They can follow simple instructions and develop a sense of ownership over their space. Here are some chores for this age group: Make Their Bed  – At this age children can start making their own bed in the morning with some guidance. Set the Table  – Setting out plates, utensils, napkins, and glasses can be a fun chore for children to do before meals and, at this age, can be done independently. Help with Cooking  – Have your child wash vegetables, stir ingredients, or help mix and measure. Take Out the Trash  – With a little help, children at this age can collect small bags of trash around the house and bring them to the main trash bin. Vacuum Small Areas  – Depending on the type of vacuum, Children can clean small rooms or areas that are safe for them to manage. Clean Up After Meals  – Children can help clear the table, scrape plates, load the dishwasher or help wash dishes. Clean Mirrors & Windows - Have your child clean mirrors and windows as they are able. Help Clean the Bathroom - Have your child help clean the bathroom sink, mirror, and bathtub. This is also a great time to start teaching them the importance of regular chores and taking care of shared spaces in the home. Chores for Ages 9-13: Building Real-Life Skills As children enter their pre-teen years, they’re ready for more challenging tasks that will help prepare them for life beyond childhood. It’s an excellent time to teach the value of hard work, time management, and independence. Here are some age-appropriate chores: Clean the Bathroom  – Children can help clean sinks, counters, mirrors, and the bathtub. Do the Laundry  – By now, children can help with washing, drying, folding, and putting away clothes with the goal of being able to do laundry independently. Take Care of Pets  – Let them feed, walk, and clean up after the family pet. Mow the Lawn  – If it’s safe, children at this age can start helping with lawn care or even mowing the lawn themselves. Cook Simple Meals  – Teach your child how to prepare basic meals like pasta, salads, or sandwiches, adding more complex recipes as they develop their kitchen skills. Wash the Car  – Depending on your child’s size, washing the car can be a fun family chore they can participate in. Organize Common Areas —Have your child help organize the living room, their room, or the family’s shared spaces. Wash Dishes - Children at this stage can load and unload the dishwasher and wash dishes. Sweep & Mop—With some guidance, children can sweep and mop by the time they enter their tween years. By this age, children can take on more significant responsibilities, and giving them a set of regular tasks will help them develop important skills they’ll use throughout their lives.
