Togo Companion Pack

Honor the true distance runner of the 1925 Serum Run with the Togo Book Companion Unit. This multi-day, multi-subject study pack is designed to accompany any book about Togo, the Siberian Husky who ran the longest and most treacherous leg of the relay that saved the town of Nome, Alaska, from a diphtheria epidemic.
 
The unit focuses on Togo's incredible intelligence, endurance, and bravery through a series of hands-on, cross-curricular activities:
Day One: Read & Record: Traditional book companion activities like Reading Notes and a Book Review.
Day Two: Geography (Mapping Adventure): Students map the historic Serum Run route and focus on Togo's crucial 260-mile leg along the dangerous coast of the Norton Sound. The day features a hands-on activity using play-dough and markers to recreate the treacherous, cracked, and shifting sea ice where Togo used his instinct to navigate.
Day Three: Science (The Sled): Explore the History of Dog Sleds and how the design, using runners, minimizes friction. Students conduct an easy friction experiment using a shoebox and pencils/dowels (as runners) to visibly demonstrate how the sled minimizes friction on the snow and ice, making the dogs' job easier.
Day Four: Literature (Character Study): Students complete a Character Analysis highlighting Togo's heroic traits. The day culminates in a Clay Sculpture activity—a Statue of Honor for Togo , acknowledging his overlooked role compared to Balto's recognition with the Central Park statue.
Day Five: Art (Sea Overflow): Study the life-threatening Arctic hazard of Sea Overflow (water hidden beneath a dusting of snow, leading to rapid hypothermia). The art activity uses a white crayon resist technique and blue-gray watercolor paint to represent how the sea overflow lurked beneath the snow on Togo's trail.
 
The pack also includes a Pop-Up Play activity and a simple, themed recipe for Togo's Hero Cup
