Food & Nutrition Nature Study Unit

This 20-day study explores the fascinating relationship between food, nutrients, and the human body while connecting nutrition to nature, agriculture, and biology.
Over the course of this 20-day nutrition unit, students will explore topics such as:
• Where food and nutrients come from
• Plants as food sources
• Animals as food sources
• The role of water and hydration in the body
• Food as energy and fuel
• Foundations of nutrients
• Building a balanced plate
• Salt, sugar, and fats in the diet
• Reading nutrition labels
• Safe food handling and food preparation skills
Students will finish the unit with a final nutrition project and optional presentation that helps them synthesize everything they have learned.
Students will discover how plants and animals provide the nutrients our bodies need, how water supports body systems, and how foods are used for energy, growth, and repair. Through readings, flashcards, posters, and hands-on activities, children will explore topics such as balanced nutrition, macronutrients and micronutrients, food labels, and food preparation skills.
This family-style homeschool unit is designed to allow multiple ages to study the same topic together, making it perfect for homeschool families with children ranging from preschool to high school.
The unit includes four student workbook levels:
• Little Explorer (ages 3–5) – hands-on matching, coloring, and simple crafts
• Junior Explorer (ages 6–8) – basic writing, identification, and simple science activities
• Senior Explorer (ages 9–11) – deeper writing prompts, STEM activities, and analysis
• Expert Explorer (ages 12+) – research, data collection, scientific method, and advanced projects
